Approximately 50-100 telogen hairs are shed every day. This is normal hair loss and seen every day in the shower and while combing hair.

Several factors may affect the hair growth cycle and cause temporary or permanent hair loss including radiation, medication, chemotherapy, exposure to chemicals, hormonal and nutritional factors, thyroid disease, generalized or local skin disease and stress.

Male pattern hair loss may begin any time after puberty when blood levels of androgens rise. Recession in the temporal areas is usually seen as the first sign of male pattern hair loss. In men with male pattern hair loss, progressive thinning of the hair occurs. The anagen or growth phase gradually decreases, and the terminal hairs in the affected areas become progressively shorter and finer, and lose their color. Although the density of hair in a given pattern of loss tends to diminish with age, there is no way to predict what pattern of hair loss a young man with early male pattern hair loss will eventually develop.

Female pattern hair loss differs from male pattern hair loss. Increased shedding of telogen hairs accompanies the reduction of shaft diameter, but the follicules first affected are more widely distributed over the frontovertical region. Partial baldness is sometimes first apparent on the vertex, but the most frequent presentation of androgenetic alopecia in women is a diffuse alopecia. There is generally a diffuse thinning throughout the area in women. It is usually seen in the thirties. It is likely to be seen at times of hormonal change, i.e., use of birth control pills, after childbirth, or around the time of menopause.
